Repurposing Fabric

We made cozy winter hats from the sleeves of old sweaters (mostly purchased at thrift stores), and it was super easy! Brenda Johnson, our fabulous instructor, also showed us how we could make mittens, scarves, or a sweater vest with the rest of the sweater. Making the hats involved cutting the sleeves off, and from these, cutting out a simple pattern that Brenda made. Following her instructions on where to sew, it only took about 45 minutes to make our first hat, and these were hand sewn! No doubt you could whip out a hat in a fraction of that time with a sewing machine once you got the hang of it.
You can find Brenda’s instruction sheet and video link below (and a picture gallery) if you want to try making one yourself. Brenda says this is also a great way to use an old sweater of a loved one who’s no longer with us.
This class was a lot of fun and we appreciate Brenda showing us how easy it can be to repurpose fabric into something new and useful!
